Manager/Supervisor
Fabrication Department Manager
Why This Role Matters
This leadership role is ideal for someone ready to lead a department that serves as a vital support system to Morris, Inc.—someone who is equally comfortable creating budgets, mentoring welders, and quoting fabrication projects for customers.

What You’ll Earn
$37.05 – $48.42 per hour  |  Depending on experience
What You’ll Do
Run the Department
  • Direct day-to-day production, distribution, and operations of the Fabrication Department — metal cutting, forming, machining, and welding
  • Develop plans for efficient use of materials, machines, and personnel to meet production goals
  • Ensure department milestones and goals are met while adhering to approved budgets
  • Work closely with other department managers to ensure scheduled repairs and projects are on track
  • Conduct daily and weekly safety and production meetings with department employees
  • Ensure shop floor, pipe yard, and steel inventory racks are clean and organized at all times
  • Ensure all vehicles, equipment, and facilities are properly maintained
Manage People & Culture
  • Lead by example and hold employees accountable to company standards
  • Teach and develop employees to grow in their career paths
  • Conduct timely employee performance evaluations
  • Ensure all company policies are followed within the department
  • Foster a culture of safety, efficiency, and continuous improvement
Handle Financials & Customer Work
  • Estimate costs of fabrication projects for Morris, Inc. and outside customers
  • Create customer invoices for retail services performed by the Fabrication Department
  • Use company software to track materials and supplies for customer and internal jobs
  • Manage materials inventory and order products as needed for common stock and special projects
  • Work with division management to build, follow, and analyze a department budget
  • Recommend policies and programs that maintain and improve competitive position and profitability
  • Perform other duties as assigned
What You’ll Need
  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical or business education a plus
  • Hands-on experience in welding, machine shop operations, and metal fabrication
  • Proven management skills — you’ve led people and run a department, not just worked in one
  • Knowledge of welding and machine shop equipment operation and maintenance
  • Some knowledge of relevant codes and standards (preferred but not required), including OSHA, MSHA, and AWS inspection procedures.
  • Experience with invoicing and inventory tracking software
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Ability to read and manage a budget and analyze departmental financials
  • Excellent communication skills — with your crew, peer managers, and customers alike
Where You’ll Work
You’ll be based in our fabrication shop in Fort Pierre, South Dakota, overseeing a hands-on team in an active production environment. This role requires regular presence on the shop floor — you’ll be visible, accessible, and engaged with your team daily. Safety is non-negotiable, and you’ll set the tone for the entire department.
